Summary
HISTORY Millions of years ago, a mighty curtain of water eroded away a series of gorges along what was to be named the Zambezi River. It was not until 1855 however, when the missionary and explorer, David Livingstone, on his quest to find a route across Africa, encountered the most magnificent waterfall that he had ‘ever laid eyes upon’. He named it after his queen, Victoria. In the fourteen years following this exciting discovery, Livingstone endured many life-threatening hardships in the course of his exploration. In 1871, the English reporter Henry Stanley was sent by the New York Herald specifically to find Livingstone as he had not been heard of for two years. On finally locating him in the Victoria Falls region, Stanley greeted Livingstone with the now–famous words, “Dr Livingstone, I presume?” The two struck up a friendship which lasted long after Stanley elected to return to England in 1872, having failed to persuade the intrepid missionary to accompany him. Dr David Livingstone died on 1 May 1873, aged 60. He had travelled some 50 000 kilometres in Africa, adding a considerable area to the known portion of the globe and in so doing, became recognised as a legendary explorer in South and Central Africa. The Stanley and Livingstone at Victoria Falls is named after these two men whose pioneering spirit lives on in the region. ABOUT VICTORIA FALLS Dubbed ‘The Smoke that Thunders’, the Victoria Falls are a spectacular sight to behold, especially when in full flood and more than 500 000 cubic metres of water are cascading over the edge every minute. Created by volcanic activity, erosion and the course of the mighty Zambezi River, the spectacular Victoria Falls has captured the hearts, minds and spirits of people everywhere. It was the explorer, David Livingstone who named the Falls after his Queen. Zimbabwe’s national parks have maintained the Falls and the surrounding rainforest virtually as they were when Livingstone first saw them almost 140 years ago. The Falls and the surrounding rainforest are preserved as a 23.4 kilometre National Park and form one of Zimbabwe’s four World Heritage sites. The sight of millions of gallons of turbulent water cascading over a sheer precipice into a narrow gorge a hundred metres below is a sight not easily forgotten. Considered the largest curtain of falling water in the world, the magnificent Victoria Falls draws visitors from all over the world. The Falls at its widest is more than one and a half kilometres and at its narrowest point sixty metres. The height of the various falls ranges between 100 and 116 metres. Victoria Falls Town
